My darling girl, I am all up for competitive sporting events. Winning, and losing, are important lessons for you to learn in life.
You may not be the most naturally talented sports person in your class but you take part and work damn hard. You really do give it your all. I’m proud of everything you do; whether you win or lose you have achieved something.
This year, sports day was an event I really wasn’t looking forward to but, as with every year, I watch the event for you. It’s an opportunity to show you I am there for you and enjoy seeing your triumphs and challenges. The conversation we had in the car left me in tears feeling defeated and broken. My little girl, my beautiful Seren, you are incredible in so many ways. I do not enjoy seeing you feeling so sad.
You felt the need to lie to me. To tell me a little white lie to ‘impress’ me. You don’t need to tell me you jumped further than you really did because you want me to be proud of you. My heart crumbled into a million small pieces as you admitted this with tears in your eyes.
It took me all afternoon to cheer you up. All afternoon to try and get you to realise that you don’t need to impress me. You impress me in so many more ways that your sporting achievements. You impress me by being my beautiful, kind and caring Seren.
Seren, you have so many talents. More than I can list.
Seren, you are kind, you are caring. You’re a budding artist and can ride a horse. You’re an awesome little sister and an incredible big sister. You are bilingual; you read English and Welsh books, you can hold conversations in English and Welsh. You always see the best in people.
My gorgeous daughter, you are happy and have an amazing sense of humor. You are more than your sporting ability, so much more.
Please, don’t ever feel like I am not impressed nor proud of you. I am both impressed and proud in equal measure.
Please, don’t ever feel like you need to excel in everything. As Dr Seuss said, “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s whole life believing it is stupid.” You are that fish, and you might not be able to climb the tree but you can do everything you are supposed to do.
